Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered Is NOT FREE, Sold as Standalone Game

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is NOT FREE

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered will be sold as a standalone title, according to a now-deleted listing by retailer GameFly.

The remastered version of the fourth title in the series is currently only available for owners of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare legacy edition, a decision which was met with discontent from fans. Activision never stated it wouldn’t sell Modern Warfare Remastered separately, however a lack of clarity surrounding the issue led many to believe this was the case.

In the post by CharlieIntel, GameFly listed the standalone release date as June 20th for the PlayStation 4 and July 20th for all other versions: this would make sense considering an agreement between Sony and Activision has meant the game’s DLC has released a month earlier on the PS4 than on Xbox One and PC.

Since Activision are yet to confirm its release, there is no official price for a separate Modern Warfare Remastered. It would be unlikely if it launched as a full-price title, however.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered includes the same campaign and multiplayer maps as the originally version, but with improved graphics and online play.

Would you buy Modern Warfare Remastered if it was sold as a standalone game? Did you pay for Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition and feel aggrieved that Activision might sell it separately? Let us know in the comments section below.

Demand for Switch So High Nintendo Has to Fly It

Nintendo countered lack of supply for its latest console, the Switch, by flying units across the world, despite the huge increase in cost.

Sales of Nintendo’s latest console surprise everybody, including the Kyoto-based company itself. The fastest-selling console of all time, even ahead of the Nintendo Wii which itself sold over 100 million units, 2.73 million Switch consoles were shipped as of March 31st. Nintendo planned to ship two million by the same date.

The company generally deals with overseas supply by freight, however because of the sheer demand this time around, it decided to take the much more expensive aerial route, the Wall Street Journal reports. This increased the cost per unit by 5,000 Yen, or £35 ($45).

It’s unsurprising that Nintendo had to go to such lengths to increase international supply for its console. It’s assumed in the Wall Street Journal that Europe and North America were the locations which required the more expensive and immediate logistics, both areas that have seen huge demand for the console.

Nintendo is expecting to ship 10 million Switch units by the end of the next fiscal year, which is March 31st 2018. With the worldwide shortages in retailers, it’s likely that the sales figures are close to the 2.73 million shipped.

Have you managed to get your hands on a Nintendo Switch? Let us know in the comments section below.

New PlayStation 5 to Release 2018, Analyst Says

Sony could release a new PlayStation in late 2018, Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong believes.

The PlayStation 4 is well ahead in the console race as it was confirmed last week that 60 million units have been shipped since it was launched four years ago. Whilst there are no recent figures on Xbox One sales, it’s expected that Microsoft have sold half, if not less, of what Sony has with its current generation console.

It seems unlikely, then, that the Japan-based console giant would feel the need to launch a new system. Xbox Scorpio is expected to release later this year, and whilst it will be the most powerful console ever made, it remains to be seen whether or not it can claw back the 30+ million users that the PS4 has on it. The PlayStation Pro also released just last year, and a two year cycle could leave many fans turning their back on a company which used to produce new systems ever 7-8 years.

Yet Damian Thong is an industry expert, and accurately predicted the release of the PS4 Slim and PS Pro, so his point is certainly one to be taken seriously.

So what would Sony’s next console be if it were to release next year? An obvious answer is the PlayStation 5: a brand new console generation to combat Microsoft’s Project Scorpio and Nintendo’s marching Switch. An alternative is to follow the same route as the Xbox team, and throw away the idea of standard console generations and provide players with continuous updates in the PlayStation family. Either way, Sony aren’t likely to please fans so soon after the release of the Pro.

Even if Thong’s predictions are true, we likely won’t hear anything about it until E3 next year, so it’s a waiting game until then.

Would you buy a new PlayStation console next year? Let us know in the comments section below.

Free Prey Demo Available on PS4 and Xbox One Now

A free demo of Prey is now available to download on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, allowing players to experience the first hour of the game.

Prey is Arkane Studios’ latest game, and although it is a reboot of the 2006 game of the same name, this title seems more a spiritual successor to the System Shock and Bioshock series’ than anything else.

Taking place on a research facility in space, players take the role of scientist Morgan Wu, a male or female depending on the player’s preference (an option which is also available in the demo). The spaceship is awash with aliens, however, and so it’s your role to make sure they don’t take over the whole facility and make it back to planet Earth.

The game launches Friday 5th May on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, however Arkane Studios decided not to give PC users access to the first hour. Polygon contacted the developer and its response was: We appreciate the enthusiasm in the PC community for Prey, and the interest in a PC demo. The team at Arkane has been fully focused on optimizing and finalizing the PC version of the game. We aim to deliver the best PC experience to our fans — and are hard at work to do just that.”

Nintendo Unveils 2DS XL

Nintendo has unveiled its latest console in development – the 2DS XL – just months after the release of its fastest selling console of all time, the Nintendo Switch.

It will be another inclusion to the 3DS family, following the original console itself, the 2DS, and the 3DS XL. Similarly to the 3DS variants, the 2DS XL will feature a clamshell design to split the main LCD screen and touch screen, but will not sport 3D visuals.

Two colours will be available, black and turquoise or white and orange, and it will take the second C-Pad, amiibo support, and improved capabilities from its 3DS XL sibling.

The console will release on July 28th, unsurprisingly the same day as three major software releases. It was recently announced that Hey! Pikmin, Miitopia, and Dr Kawashima’s Devilish Brain Training: Can You Stay Focussed will also release on the same day.

At $149 the 2DS XL is more affordable than the 3DS XL, so will serve as a good option for those who aren’t interested in the latter’s 3D capabilities but don’t agree with the solid, blocked design of the 2DS.

Will you be picking up a 2DS XL? Let us know in the comments section below.

PS4 Reaches 60 Million Shipped

Sony has shipped 60 million PlayStation 4 consoles to date, as it released its earnings for the last fiscal year (April 1st 2016 to May 31st 2017).

The video gaming giant shipped 2.9 million consoles over the last three months of the fiscal year, 0.6 million more than over the same period last year. In total 20 million consoles were shipped over the whole last fiscal year, up from 17.7 during the previous one. Whilst this doesn’t represent the exact number of PS4 consoles sold, the fact that as of January 1st 53.4 million had been purchased shows it wouldn’t be too far off the shipment figures.

The company is expecting to ship less this fiscal year, but the 18 million forecast would still put the total figure at 78 million. The PlayStation 3 shipped around 80 million units, so the current generation’s console is catching up quickly. There’s no doubt that Sony will have its eyes on the magic 100 that its first two systems achieved.

Game and Network Services, the company’s PlayStation division, saw a 6.3% increase in revenue to $14.73 billion even though console prices have fallen, mainly due to the increase in hardware and software sales. Operating income for the gaming division rose to $1.21 billion even though it fell to $2.57 billion throughout the company as a whole.

The full financial report is here.

Do you think Sony will manage to hit over 100 million consoles shipped? Let us know in the comments section below.

Red Dead Redemption GTA V Mod Forced to Shut Down

A promising and ambitious Grand Theft Auto V mod of the Red Dead Redemption map ported inside the GTA V engine has been shut down, three years into its production.

The leader of the project, Mr. Leisurewear, successfully managed to reverse engineer the majority of Red Dead Redemption’s map, making it playable within GTA V’s engine. Screenshots released several months ago increased fan excitement, and the first trailer for the mod, released Friday 21st April, showed the port to be a reality.

However, Mr. Leisurewear took to gtaforums to explain that the mod has been forced to shut down.

“I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted, and we sadly have to say we are stopping this project. So thanks guys, we were all so happy to see this, but it isn’t going to happen, sorry :/ :/ :/”

Whilst it remains unclear exactly who contacted the programmer, it seems likely that either Rockstar or its parent company, Take Two, stepped into due to legal issues. As its intellectual property, both companies would have the right to protect Red Dead Redemption and the game it was being ported into, Grand Theft Auto V. With Red Dead Redemption 2 on track to release later this year, it’s also likely that they saw the mod as an unwelcome distraction.

It looks as though fans will have to wait for the official sequel now, which is expected to release in October of this year on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

What do you think of the ambitious mod being shut down? Let us know in the comments section below.
